Game report

Although the hosts are playing the most beatiful hockey, against Sweden they didn´t get that much space for their combination as in previous games. They were a bit surprised after having scored the first goal against them.

Simon Olsson reamined alone in front of the net and his nice move didn´t give Handl any chance. But Czechs didn´t try to hurry up and waited for their moment. Petr Tenkrát, after a nice combination with Vladimír Kameš, took advantage of the Czech powerplay and 30 seconds later, Tomáš Demel capitalized his individual action with a surprising backhand shot.

In the third period, the Czechs outshot Sweden 16-5 but only scored twice. Jan Besser deflected the puck after Pavel Strýček´s shot from blue line. And Petr Tenkrát was at the of another powerplay combination.

If the whole game was interesting, the last twelve minutes were the most delightful. Jiří Polanský couldn´t have found a hole below Idoff´s pads to capitalize his breakaway and on the other side Bejmo showed a great pass to make Kristian Luukkonen score the second Swedish goal.

Nervous end resulted in a huge man-on-man fight with all eight players on the rink involed. One of the most experienced Czech players Karel Rachůnek received double minor penalty for roughing and misconduct for fighting. Sweden took advantage of their four minute powerplay after only half a minute and remained playing four on three.

The best Czech scorer Luděk Bukač scored the empty net goal with less than a minute remaining. And twelve seconds before the last horn, Petr Tenkrát added another empty-net one and completed hattrick. Czechs beat Sweden 6-3.

Game reactions

Petr Hemský (Team Czech Republic coach): I am not in favor of brawls and fights, but I think people had to be satisfied with the game. In the end, I am happy for this game, because playoff games are going to be similar. We can meet Sweden again and we have to be more disciplined. We will try to be good in defense, while playing attractive hockey.

Fredrik Skoog (Team Sweden coach): I think we showed we are a really good team that came here to win gold medals. We scored first, but then had a couple of penalties. Czech Republic is a good team and you have to put in a perfect performance against this kind of opponent. I don´t want to comment on penalties.
