Game report
Austria started strongly and Axel Riegler opened the scoring with a precise shot past the goalkeeper. In the 9th minute, Gregor Baumgartner´s effort went in via a deflection off the underside of the post. Austria was on top in the first quarter and was supported by a great performance from goalie Schilcher.
However, the game provided a sharp twist when Luke Fritchley pulled one back for Australia on a powerplay. In the 28th minute, Jones capitalized on a big mistake by Austrian defence, slipped through on goal and finished perfectly. Not even one minute later, Adrian Nash tapped in a close range rebound to turn the score around.
Austrians still had enough in their reservoir to come back. Lukas Draschkowitz´s close range rebound equalized the score and one minute later, Andre Niec showed great skill in finishing his individual effort with a goal towards the far post. “We managed to come back, so we are very happy for a win,” said Mario Altmann of Team Austria. His team finishes second in Group C, while Australia is third. “We are not happy with the result, but we put a lot of effort into the game. We want to come back with a medal,” said Team Australia captain Jordan Gavin.
