Game report

Czech Republic started strongly and took the lead after just three minutes. Jan Besser deflected a shot by Pavel Strycek out of goalkeeper Petri Karhu´s reach. Shortly afterwards, Petr Tenkrat found a loose puck inside the Finnish crease and scored with an easy rebound to make it 2:0. Finland was not too disheartened by the bad start and after seven minutes got back into the game thanks to Sami Markkanen´s power play one-timer. Even before the end of the first quarter, though, Czechs regained their two-goal advantage as Ludek Broz fired in a quick rebound from tight angle.

The game was pretty even with both teams skating well, but Czechs were better in combination play and when Jiri Polansky added two straight goals, the game was out of Finland´s reach. Polansky scored his first with a quick combination, then a second after an individual effort. At 30:15, Petr Tenkrat added to the Czech tally with his second goal of the game and when Pavel Strycek finished a power play combination shortly before the end of third quarter, the score rose to 7:1.

Finns tried hard to avoid humiliation and often threatened Roman Handl in the Czech goal, especially during powerplays, but the only player able to score against the Czechs was Sami Markkanen. His beautiful slapshot in the 36th minute at least provided some consolation for his team.

Early in the last period, Martin Vozdecky was clean through on goal and finished expertly, beating Finnish substitute goalie Airasvaara on his glove side. The goal account was finished by Ludek Broz on a quick breakaway. Tenkrat was then close to a hat-trick and the home crowd was asking for the tenth goal, but Finns held strong in the closing stages.

Game reactions

Jan Procházka (Team Czech Republic assistant coach): We expected a tough game, Finns beat Sweden yesterday. We had respect. We wanted to play carefully, not to lose pucks unnecessarily. We managed to improve this side of our play compared to the first game, which brought the final result. We also played really well in defence. There are many experienced players on the team and we believe at least some of them will always be able to score.

Nemo Nokkosmaki (Team Finland coach): It was a one-sided game, we were taught a lesson by Czechs. They showed some nice moves and were the better team. On the other hand, we were not able to create scoring opportunities. We have another game coming up tomorrow and will make some changes.
